The makers of Cobra Kai, Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg, are working on a new Duke Nukem movie adaptation. The main character of the action video game series from 3D Realms regularly engages in combat to defend Earth from extraterrestrial invaders. Three straight sequels and several spinoffs were released after the 1991 release of the original game in the Duke Nukem series, which had the same name.

The first-person shooter Duke Nukem games received both praise and criticism throughout their existence for the amount of violence, sexuality, and other contentious issues they featured in each game. Duke Nukem Forever, the series’ concluding installment, was particularly criticized for its out-of-date themes and unresponsive controls. Due to the game’s early success, attempts to adapt Duke Nukem for the big screen have dragged on for more than 20 years. Despite the franchise’s apparent lack of a future on consoles, it seems that its dreams for the big screen are finally making progress.

A few years ago, it was revealed that John Cena will play the title alien hunter in the forthcoming Duke Nukem movie adaption for Paramount Pictures and Platinum Dunes. Despite Gearbox owner Embracer Group’s assurances that the movie was still in development only last year, original Duke Nukem voice actor Jon St. John cast doubt on that development a year after it was made public. The most recent Duke Nukem movie story reveals that the last adaptation perished in development hell, but it is unclear from the source if Cena will agree to reprise his role as Nukem.
